News and Media in Ireland...

So far, BBC broadcasts the news in Ireland. From what I can see are the differences:

-They broadcast relevant images/footage of war. I learned in my theory class, which covered propaganda, the U.S. has not broadcast or published images of war since the Vietnam war. And any images broadcasted or published currently, are mostly heroic events. It would be interesting to see a comparison of image/footage pool between different countries [i.e. AP Reuters or Getty Images web sites].

-The language is less exaggerated. For example, BBC news coverage of the current economic crisis compares the current recession to that of the 1980's, while most American news compared it to the Great Depression.

-Even if their network is viewed negatively in a story, they broadcast it. About 4 days ago, there was a protest in the UK against BBC and Sky/BBC of their coverage on the war in Gaza. Surprisingly, they broadcast the story, showing thousands of protesters. Other than the NY Times (maybe), I'm not sure if any network would do the same (FOX, CNN, etc.)

Here is the story I am talking about in the NY Times 3 or 4 days later.

-This point might be minutia, but the television journalists here don't wear make-up, and can wear jeans given the circumstances of the story (e.g. a journalist was in Gaza, and she was wearing jeans walking through the ruins), but most anchors wear a suit in neutral colors, whereas red suits or some of the more fashionable colors. I guess the anchors here look like they are more focused on the story.

In terms of other media, not news, most shows are about cops, reruns of talk shows (e.g. Oprah and Ellen) and popular shows from the U.S. (e.g. Gossip Girl, Sex And The City, and Scrubs), iterations of reality shows (e.g. American Idol, or dance competitions), and entertainment news. One of the shows they were introducing was a dance competition, similar to the popular one in the U.S., except this one would be a global competition (e.g. Ballerinas from Russia, Bollywood dancers of India, or Irish dancers/"Riverdance"). Actually the host of the show was the famed dancer from Riverdance, Michael Flatley.

I was amused because there were hardly any commercial breaks for the Oprah show, and more for the Ellen show, but mainly because who they hosted. Oprah did a whole show on Tom Cruise at his Colorado ranch, and Ellen interviewed Collin Farrell, Joe Biden, and Toni Braxton. I guess people here didn't want to engage with Oprah's public relations attempt to make-up Tom Cruise (i.e. there were far more television ads for Ellen's show than Oprah's). Her show did look fake. The camera people used some fuzzy filter to soften the look of their interview and make tears glisten. A couple of times, the crew would cut to prepped scanned images of Tom Cruise and family to soften his overall image. Overall, given that Tom Cruise is an actor, the Oprah show didn't look genuine enough, but it is an interesting study of how pr can be strategic. Much to Oprah's credit, she's not really a journalist, so her attempt to portray the two sides of Tom Cruise was the best she could do.
